Preparing for Holiday Dialysis

Planning ahead is essential for a stress-free holiday dialysis experience. Making sure everything is in place before you visit us helps avoid any unexpected surprises. That’s why your first step will be to contact our Global Patient Services (GPS) team. They’ll arrange a phone call or virtual visit with you and one of our renal consultants to go through all the important details before you travel.

They’ll want to know your medical history, the type of dialysis you receive and your dialysis prescription. They’ll also let you know which medical documents to bring, including recent blood tests and other lab results.

If our renal team confirms that holiday dialysis is suitable for you, they will go ahead and organise your treatment.

Here are a few more things to keep in mind as you prepare for your visit:

  • Notify your home-based renal team as soon as you’ve confirmed with our renal specialist and know your travel plans.
  • Obtain a written consent form from your renal team that ensures you are medically stable enough to travel and may safely receive dialysis while you’re away.
  • Pack essential items like medications, list of current prescriptions, an ID card and emergency contact information in your carry-on luggage. Bring extra medications in case of travel delays.

Our Global Patient Services (GPS) team can also assist with travel arrangements, recommend hotel accommodations and provide language interpretation services if needed.

What To Expect When You Arrive for Dialysis

When you arrive at Cleveland Clinic London for your dialysis appointment, you’ll first meet with a renal specialist. They’ll go over your medical records, lab work and dialysis prescription. If you need additional blood tests, they’ll let you know. They’ll also explain our safety protocols.

Then, a renal nurse will check your vital signs, like blood pressure, temperature, weight and heart rate. They may also listen to your lungs and check your pulse.

You’ll then proceed with dialysis treatment exactly as you would at home. Please bring anything that helps make you comfortable, like blankets, pillows, socks — and maybe a book or laptop to help you pass the time while receiving treatment. A renal nurse will continue to monitor your vital signs and check for changes during treatment.

Our renal team will meet weekly (or more frequently, if necessary) to assess your condition. You may also need regular blood tests to allow for any modifications to your treatment.

Locations

Our consultants see patients in modern and technologically advanced facilities in the heart of London.

After Treatment

When your treatment session is complete and you have been disconnected from the dialysis machine, a renal nurse will take your blood pressure and weigh you one more time. Then, you’ll be free to go.

Remember, even though you’re on holiday or traveling for work, it’s important to continue taking good care of yourself. That means getting enough rest, staying hydrated, adhering to your kidney-friendly eating plan, taking your prescribed medications and following up with your healthcare providers at home, if needed.
