Our specialist treatment programmes include:

Biopsies

Biopsies are diagnostic surgical procedures to remove small tissue samples for examination under a microscope. We may perform biopsies to help diagnose a condition. Biopsies we perform include:

  • Brain biopsy, where we remove a small tissue sample from your brain.
  • Nerve, muscle and arterial biopsies, where we take tissue samples from nerves, muscles and arteries (blood vessels).

Minimally invasive procedures

Our team performs many minimally invasive or non-invasive procedures to treat neurological conditions:

  • Baclofen pumps, used to administer a muscle relaxant medicine to decrease spasticity related to multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries or other neurological diseases.
  • Gamma knife radiosurgery, a form of radiation therapy that treats brain disorders and doesn’t involve surgical incisions.
  • Minimally invasive laser therapy for brain tumour and epilepsy treatment.
  • Spinal cord stimulation, a procedure that delivers electrical signals to the spinal cord or specific nerves to block pain signals.

Surgery

We perform many types of neurosurgery to repair or treat a wide range of conditions. We often use cranial and spinal robotic technology to increase accuracy and safety during surgery.

  • Brain tumour removal surgery, during which we use interventional MRI to confirm we completed the removal of the brain tumour.
  • Epilepsy surgery, a type of brain surgery for people whose seizures are not controlled by medication.
  • Deep brain stimulation, to implant electrodes in the brain, which deliver electrical impulses that block or change the abnormal activity that causes symptoms.
  • Neurovascular surgery, for disorders which impact the blood supply to the brain or spinal cord, including aneurysms, cavernomas and AVMs.
  • Skull-base surgery, to remove tumours or other lesions at the base of the skull.
  • Spinal fusion surgery, to connect two or more vertebrae in your spine if unstable.
  • Surgery to repair spinal disks that have degenerated and decompression of the spine due to degeneration or tumours.
  • Ventriculoperitoneal shots, ventriculostomy and intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring for disorders of hydrocephalus and raised brain pressure.
  • Functional surgery, to treat trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm.
