Biography & Education
About Mr Kelvin Lau
Mr Kelvin Lau qualified in medicine at Oxford University and is Clinical Director and consultant at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. During his time at Oxford he was awarded a ICRF PhD studentship to research new cancer treatments targeting tumour vessels. He was awarded the only cardiothoracic surgery national training post in 2006. His training took him to pioneering centres in the world, including the Royal Brompton, Edinburgh, Leicester and Hong Kong. He went on to complete a keyhole surgery fellowship at the Chinese University of Hong Kong where he was honorary assistant professor.
On return to the UK, he was appointed the first consultant thoracic surgeon at St Bartholomew’s Hospital to set up the thoracic surgery service. He introduced VATS lobectomy, navigation bronchoscopy and hybrid theatre programmes, emphysema and COPD surgery, mesothelioma surgery and a 24/7 dedicated thoracic robotic surgery programme with the largest volume and experience in the UK, specialising in lung preserving segmentectomy.
In November 2015 he led the first team in Europe to successfully use the latest version of navigation bronchoscopy and in 2018 performed the first lung tumour destruction through navigation bronchoscopy using microwave ablation, for which he is recognised internationally as a leader.
His research interests include small lung nodules, navigation bronchoscopy and ablation to destroy lung cancers without incision, endobronchial valves and lung volume reduction surgery for COPD emphysema, robotic surgery and segmentectomy. He is principal investigator for NAVIGATE, NAVABLATE and MARS2 trials. In 2011 he was awarded the Robert Ginsberg lectureship by the IASLC for his work establishing the relationship between specialist thoracic surgeons and resection rates.
