About Mr Muti Abulafi
Mr Muti Abulafi is a consultant colorectal and general surgeon with over 30 years of surgical experience. Mr Abulafi graduated from Cairo University and obtained fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in1988. He was awarded Master of Surgery degree (MS) from the University of London in 1993 for his research work on the role of intraoperative photodynamic therapy in colorectal cancer. After a period of surgical training at the Royal London and St. Thomas’s Hospitals, Mr Abulafi was appointed in 1996 as a consultant colorectal surgeon at Croydon University Hospital (CUH).
He is a member of the colorectal cancer multi-disciplinary team (MDT) at CUH and the Colorectal Pathway Group of the Royal Marsden Partners (RMP) Accountable Cancer Network, a partnership of 10 NHS trusts in South and West London. Mr Abulafi led the Colorectal Cancer MDT for 10 years until 2018 and chaired the Pathway Group for 5 years until 2020. He was a member of the Clinical Board of the London Cancer Alliance until April 2016 and also the director of cancer services at CUH for eight years, until August 2012. Mr Abulafi is a past member of the research and audit committee of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.
He has a research interest in and has published on colorectal cancer and cancer genetics. Mr Abulafi is the chief investigator of the NICE FIT study, a multicentre clinical study involving 50 NHS Hospitals in England, looking at the role of the FIT for early diagnosis of colorectal cancer. He is a founder and co-convener of the annual M25 colorectal Masterclass at Basingstoke funded by the Pelican Cancer Foundation, which teaches young trainee surgeons on all aspects of colorectal surgery.
