About Mr Sam Rajaratnam

Mr Sam Rajaratnam FRCS (Tr. & Orth.) is an internationally renowned Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knee replacement surgery and sporting injuries of the knee.

Mr Rajaratnam has performed 7000+ knee replacements with excellent outcomes, and is considered the leading expert on rapid recovery and lower pain scores following knee surgery. He has one of the lowest revision (failure) rates and best outcomes (PROMS) for knee replacement on the UK National Joint Registry and is an advocate for transparent, outcome driven care. With Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Barry Phillips, he has developed techniques to reduce post-operative pain and enhance rapid recovery following knee surgery.

He is an expert on robotic assisted knee replacement surgery and was first to implement ROSA robotic technology in the UK private sector. Mr Rajaratnam regularly treats professional sportspeople with soft tissue knee injuries, and has performed 2000+ ACL reconstructions and other soft tissue operations as day case procedures. He treats members of the Professional Football Association and is on the faculty of the FIFA Football medicine conference.

Mr Rajaratnam trained at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital and qualified with a First Class degree in anatomy and an MBBS in 1997. His higher specialty training was via the Royal College of Surgeons and at numerous centres of excellence in the UK and Australia. He won the highest honour at the end of his surgical training, awarded the Walter Mercer Gold Medal in 2006.

He was the British Orthopaedic Association Ambassador to Hong Kong in 2007 and has been a consultant surgeon since 2008. He has an international reputation as a leading knee surgeon, and is regularly visited by other surgeons wanting to learn the latest knee surgery techniques.
