About Mr Jeremy Smelt

Mr Jeremy Smelt is a Consultant Thoracic and Robotic Surgeon and Clinical Lead at St. George’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London. His specialist interests include minimally invasive surgery, both keyhole (VATS) and Robotic (RATS), lung cancer surgery, and thymectomy for myasthenia gravis. He specialises in surgery of the chest, including the bony chest wall, lungs, mediastinum and the covering of the heart (pericardium). About 85% of the surgery Jeremy performs is minimally invasive (keyhole). Jeremy completed his basic medical training at Nottingham University and entered higher surgical training in the London Deanery obtaining BMBS BMedSci (Hons) DOHNS FRCS (CTh) PhD degrees during this time. Jeremy has a wide range of experience in thoracic surgery performing segmental and lobar anatomical lung resections using both open, keyhole (VATS) and robotic techniques. He has a specialist practice in minimally invasive thymectomy surgery, performing thymectomies for thymomatous and non-thymomatous disease. Jeremy teaches on various courses including the Royal College of Surgeons in England CCRISP (Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient) and the Royal College of Surgeons in England Student Surgical Skills, Cardiac Advanced Life Support and the Royal Society of Medicine Anatomy Course. Jeremy has published many papers in peer reviewed medical journals, and written chapters in text books, the majority of which are as first author. He regularly reviews manuscripts for publication in several journals. Jeremy holds a PhD in simulation and surgical assessment.
