Biography & Education

About Dr Emer McGilloway

Dr Emer McGilloway studied Medicine at Queen’s University Belfast working at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast and then as Neurology registrar at Beaumont, St Vincent’s and St James’s hospitals in Dublin. She became interested in the rehabilitation of neurological injury and moved to London where she trained in Rehabilitation Medicine at King’s College Hospital, the Royal National Hospital for Neuro-disability and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore.

In 2010 Dr McGilloway joined the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Headley Court as Lead consultant for neuro-rehabilitation and subject matter expert for the Ministry of Defence.

She was appointed Clinical Lead for neurological and trauma rehabilitation at King’s College Hospital in 2015 where she led a successful bid for additional inpatient neurorehabilitation beds in SouthEast London, effectively doubling the current provision.

Dr McGilloway represents London on the National Clinical Reference Group for Disability and Rehabilitation and chairs the National clinical pathway development group for spinal injury.

She has recently been appointed Topic Adviser to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) on the national guideline for rehabilitation for chronic neurological disorders.

She is consultant adviser to the Rugby Football Union Injured Players Foundation with a special interest in traumatic brain injury.

Interests beyond medicine include opera and theatre. She is an alumna of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio and was a professional opera singer for several years working as a soloist with Opera North, Welsh National Opera, English National Opera and Glyndebourne.
