Biography & Education
About Dr Mallika Sekhar
Dr Mallika Sekhar qualified in Medicine from Grant Medical College, University of Bombay. She has trained in Mumbai and Vellore in India; NIH, Bethesda, U.S.; and London, U.K..
Dr Sekhar has been a Consultant Haematologist at Royal Free London NHS Trust since 2011 and University College Hospital since 2014. She is an honorary associate Professor at University College London. Before joining the Royal Free, she was a consultant Haematologist at West Middlesex University Hospital between 1995 and 2011.
Her clinical and research interests include complex anaemias, cytopaenias and high blood counts, and chronic disorders of the marrow. She heads the transfusion and immune haematology service and until recently, was co-lead of the myeloproliferative neoplasms service.
Dr Sekhar has developed a multidisciplinary service for patients with myeloproliferative diseases and abdominal vein thrombosis and has established the U.K. Mascot registry for this rare condition.
She has over fifty publications in these areas and has contributed to national policies in blood safety. She has served as a non-executive member of the board of the National Blood Authority of England and Wales and as a committee member of SaBTO. She teaches Haematology to students and trainees and was a lead examiner for the FRCPAth Transfusion section.
She is an alumnus of Harvard University where she trained in the Media and Medicine program and an alumnus of Faber Academy’s creative writing programme.
Dr Sekhar has research interests in medical error and has recently produced a podcast series titled 'The Bitter Pill' in this area.
