About Professor Alastair O'Brien

Professor Alastair O'Brien is a Professor of Hepatology and Clinical Director of the Comprehensive Clinical Trials Unit at University College London. He is a Consultant Hepatologist at The Royal Free and University College Hospitals.

ProfessorO'Brien has received funding from the Wellcome Trust, Department of Health, National Institute for Health Research, Medical Research Council, British Society of Gastroenterology and Rosetrees Trust.

His work has been published in the world's top journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet and Nature Medicine.

He is a very experienced clinician and looks after all causes of liver disease, ranging from abnormal liver blood tests to advanced cirrhosis and everything in between. Most people he looks after have alcohol or obesity related liver disease but he also sees a large number with primary biliary cholangitis, hemochromatosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, autoimmune liver disease, vascular liver disease and liver cancer. Prof O'Brien aims to put the patient's concerns at the forefront in a relaxed, professional manner.

Away from medicine, he is a keen runner and dedicated husband and father.
