Biography & Education

About Dr Sam Dawkins

Dr Sam Dawkins is a cardiologist who specialises in general cardiology, interventional cardiology and structural intervention, including mitral and tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER using Pascal, MitraClip and TriClip), transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD), paravalvular leak closure and left atrial appendage occlusion.

He offers a comprehensive service for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cardiac symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain and palpitations. For patients who already have a diagnosis (for example severe aortic stenosis, mitral/tricuspid regurgitation, patent foramen ovale), he can review previous imaging and provide treatment advice. He carries out face-to-face, telephone and video consultations and is frequently asked to provide a second opinion in complex cases.

Dr Dawkins trained in medicine at King’s College London, completed a DPhil (PhD) at the University of Oxford (Trinity College) and then spent two years working at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he trained in complex structural intervention, including TAVI, mitral/tricuspid TEER and complex coronary intervention. He has been an investigator for multiple trials of new medical devices, including first-in-man studies.

He is the clinical lead for structural intervention in Oxford, which is one of the largest structural programmes in the country. He has introduced several new technologies to the UK, including the first left atrial appendage occlusion procedure with the Watchman Flx device and the first tricuspid repair procedures with the Pascal and TriClip devices. He regularly lectures on these techniques in the UK and around the world.
