About Dr Natalia Zarate-Lopez
Dr Natalia Zarate-Lopez specialised in gastroenterology in Spain. After completing a post-CCT fellowship in Neurogastroenterology at Hospital Vall d’Hebron, Barcelona, she obtained a fellowship at MacMaster University, Canada at the Intestinal Disease Research Programme where she studied the role of interstitial cells of Cajal in human motor disorders.
Dr Zarate-Lopez achieved her PhD in 2008 with a project integrating basic science and clinical research leading to ground-breaking investigation of the pacemakers of the gut.
After moving to London, she obtained further training and expertise in lower GI physiology and pelvic floor disorders at the Centre for Academic Surgery at The Royal London Hospital. In 2018, Dr Zarate-Lopez was appointed a Consultant Neurogastroenterologist at UCLH and is one of the clinical leads of the GI Physiology Unit. She has expertise in all standard and advance GI Physiology tests, including oesophageal and anorectal high resolution manometry, wireless pH/motility capsule, nuclear medicine gastric emptying, SIBO tests and barostat. Dr Zarate-Lopez's clinical activity is turned to upper and lower gastrointestinal functional and motility disorders. She has a special interest in gastroparesis and pelvic floor disorders and the impact of rheumatological, neurological and endocrine disorders on gut sensorimotor function.
Dr Zarate-Lopez has an active interest in research particularly the development and implementation of novel techniques to manage patients with functional and motility gut disorders.
She has more than 40 peer reviewed publications in the field of GI physiology and Neurogastroenterology and she is passionate about promoting better training in the Neurogastroenterology subspeciality among gastro trainees.
