Biography & Education
About Professor Olaf Wendler
After his surgical training at the Medical School Hannover and the Heart Center Leipzig in Germany, Prof Olaf Wendler became Clinical Lead at the University Saarland/Germany. In 2004 he was appointed at King’s College Hospital, and held the position of Clinical Director for Cardiovascular Services from 2006-2012, when he was promoted Professor of Cardiac Surgery at King’s College London. In 2019 he was appointed Chair of the Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic London.
Professor Wendler has a particular expertise in complex and repeat combined heart procedures, complete arterial coronary bypass surgery, complex thoracic aortic surgery and minimally-invasive/innovative heart surgery and treatment of heart valve disease. In 2007 he performed the UK’s first transapical TAVI procedure, followed by numerous innovative therapies.
His focus has always been to provide an individualized, patient focused service. This has improved patient outcome, long-term benefits after therapy and the patient’s experience, while minimizing the negative effects of surgery. Professor Wendler has published more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has been co-author on European Guidelines for the treatment of valvular heart disease and myocardial revascularization. As an expert in his field, he is regularly invited to speak at national and international scientific meetings.
