Biography & Education

About Dr Gavin Johnson

Since 2009 Dr Gavin Johnson has been a Consultant Gastroenterologist at University College London (UCL) Hospitals and The Royal Free Hospitals, and an Honorary Professor in Medical Education at UCL. Dr Johnson graduated from Newcastle University Medical School with Merit in 1998, and has trained in the North East of England, Australia and London.

Dr Johnson's main clinical interest is in advanced endoscopy (including Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), and Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) medicine.

Dr Johnson's principal research interest is in Medical Education and assessment of competence. He has a Diploma, Masters and Medical Doctorate in Medical Education from his work in assessment of postgraduate training with the Royal College of Physicians of London.

Dr Johnson has been the Director of Undergraduate Education at UCL Hospitals since 2014, and until 2019 was the lead for Year 4 of UCL Medical School for 8 years. He continues to be the lead for gastroenterology teaching at UCL Medical School.

Dr Johnson is on the Quality Assurance in Training group of JAG, and leads on U.K. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and Endoscopic ultrasound

(EUS) accreditation. In 2019-20 Dr Johnson led on the development of European standards in ERCP and EUS training for the European Society of GI Endoscopy (ESGE).

Since 2010 Dr Johnson has developed numerous endoscopy and gastroenterology postgraduate courses in the UK and Europe, and has authored numerous original peer reviewed papers and book chapters in endoscopy and medical education.

A perfect weekend would include family, good food and lots of fresh air (on a road bike, a run, a touchline, or a golf course).
