About Mr Ramesh Thurairaja

Mr Ramesh Thurairaja is a consultant urological surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He undertook his first fellowship at the world-renowned Inselspital in Bern, Switzerland where he was mentored by Professor Urs Studer in prostate and bladder cancer and open reconstructive surgery particularly in creating ‘Studer’ orthotropic bladder substitution. His second fellowship was in robotic prostate and bladder cancer surgery and reconstruction at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. Mr Thurairaja was originally appointed as a consultant urological surgeon at Kent & Canterbury Hospital where he successfully started and led the robotic bladder cancer service for East Kent. In 2014, Ramesh moved to Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital as a consultant urological surgeon to join this internationally renowned tertiary Bladder Cancer Team. Mr Thurairaja performs both open and robotic surgery including intra-corporeal urinary diversion using the Da Vinci robotic system for bladder cancer and reconstructive surgery. He also runs the only dedicated Radiation Cystitis Clinic in the UK dealing with complex patients with urinary and pain symptoms including bleeding following radiotherapy for pelvic cancers. He completed his MD thesis with the University of London in Prostate Cancer and has published over 30 articles on various topics within urology in international journals. Mr Thurairaja is a tutor for King’s College London GKT School of Medical Education and the clinical supervisor for the Royal College of Surgeons (BAUS) Bladder Cancer Fellowship. Ramesh sees all general urological complaints and has particular interests in urological cancers, radiation cystitis, recurrent urinary tract infections and chronic pelvic pain.
