Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is the most effective way to detect and prevent serious bowel conditions, including colorectal cancer. This day case procedure plays a vital role in screening, diagnosis and maintaining long-term digestive health. At Cleveland Clinic London, our world-class consultants perform colonoscopies with precision, discretion and care in our state-of-the-art endoscopy unit. Whether you are looking for a routine screening or investigating symptoms, we offer flexible and prompt appointments within a calm and professional environment from start to finish.

What To Expect for Your Colonoscopy at Cleveland Clinic London
Preparing for a colonoscopy can naturally cause some apprehension and uncertainty — especially if you are experiencing symptoms like rectal bleeding, a change in bowel habit, or even undergoing a routine screening for bowel cancer or polyps. At Cleveland Clinic London, we’re here for you.
Our team of experienced consultants and caregivers will guide you through every stage of your procedure. We will take the time to answer your questions and make sure you are prepared for your colonoscopy.
Preparing for Your Colonoscopy
Before your procedure, you will be given colonoscopy bowel preparation instructions. This will include temporarily changing what you eat before the procedure and taking a laxative — a medicine to help you empty your bowels. This prep is important to make sure your large intestine is clear for better visibility and an effective colonoscopy.
Your consultant may ask you to stop taking certain regular medications before your procedure. Please talk with your team about what you can take, when you need to change your typical routine, and when you can start taking them normally again.
During Your Colonoscopy
When you arrive for your colonoscopy, your consultant will discuss your options for anaesthesia. This could be deep sedation where you are fully asleep or a conscious sedation where you are between sleep and wakefulness. It will take some time for the anesthesia to wear off, so please plan to have someone take you home.
During your colonoscopy, our consultants will gently insert a flexible tube with a light and camera (colonoscope) into your colon to look for any abnormities. You shouldn’t feel any pain but may experience some gas pain or pressure.
Our consultants will remove polyps (abnormal growths) that they see during the procedure. These are sent to our labs to test to check for anything unusual.
