What’s the Difference Between a Screening Mammogram and a Diagnostic Mammogram?

Screening mammograms are routine X-ray imaging tests. They help detect changes in your breasts that could indicate cancer before symptoms develop. A screening mammogram can give us a baseline to compare with future mammograms so we can monitor your breast health. Our consultants typically recommend having a screening every one or two years, starting at age 40.

If we detect an area of concern in your mammogram, you will be asked to come back for further assessment. This may include having additional mammograms, an ultrasound and, possibly, a biopsy.

Having a Screening Mammogram at Cleveland Clinic London

You may book an appointment or walk-in for a breast screening. If your consultant recommends a more extensive diagnostic mammogram or other advanced breast services, such as a breast ultrasound or a bone density test, we partner with nearby King Edward VII’s Hospital for comprehensive care.

How to prepare for a breast screening

There are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind before your breast screening:

  • If you’ve had a mammogram before, make sure to send us those images prior to your appointment.
  • If you’re breastfeeding, pregnant or think you might be pregnant, inform your consultant. They may recommend a breast ultrasound instead of a mammogram.
  • If you menstruate, avoid having a mammogram the week before or during menstruation. Your breasts may be more sensitive during this time.
  • Tell your consultant if you have breast implants.

On the day of your screening, follow your normal routine. Eat, drink and take your medications. Do not use deodorant, perfume, powder or lotion. These things can interfere with the X-rays. Also, you’ll need to undress from the waist up, so wearing a top and bottoms may be more convenient.

What to expect during a breast screening

When you arrive for your mammogram, you’ll be given an open-front hospital gown and asked to remove any jewelry and all clothing above your waist.

You’ll stand very close to an X-ray (mammography) machine that’s specifically designed to examine breast tissue.

A mammographer will help you place your breast on a plate attached to the machine and will slowly bring another plate (called a paddle) down on your breast, compressing it. The machine takes two to four X-ray images (mammograms) of your breast. The entire process typically takes 30 minutes or less. Results from a screening mammogram are generally available within 48 to 72 hours, excluding weekends.
