Neuromodulation for Pain Management
Nerve (neuropathic) pain can be mild, but it can also cause intense burning, stabbing discomfort. The pain can come and go, or it can linger, and standard medications frequently offer little relief. Neuromodulation therapy is an advanced pain management technique that effectively alleviates these symptoms. Cleveland Clinic London is home to world-renowned pain management consultants who specialise in neuromodulation and deliver excellent results.
Why Choose Us for Neuromodulation for Pain Management?
Specialised knowledge:
We are one of the few U.K. centres offering spinal cord, sacral nerve, multifidus and peripheral nerve stimulation. We also do external, noninvasive neuromodulation for migraine and facial pain. Meet our team.
Patient-centered care:
Before we start any treatment, we do a thorough investigation to determine if nerve stimulation or other pain management therapies might help. If we decide neuromodulation is the right option, you’ll start with a trial implant before committing to long-term therapy.
Collaborative care:
Our nurse specialist helps to make your experience as seamless as possible and will explain exactly what to expect from therapy. If you need additional tests and treatments, our pain management consultants may work with other Cleveland Clinic London experts to coordinate your care.
Types of Neuromodulation for Pain Management We Offer at Cleveland Clinic London
Neuromodulation uses a small device (neurotransmitter), which is similar to a pacemaker. This device delivers a gentle electrical current that blocks pain signals before they reach your brain. Different devices target discomfort in your back, face or pelvis. We often implant neurotransmitters under your skin, but external options are also available.
Depending on your needs, you’ll have access to several types of neuromodulation devices, including:
- Dorsal root ganglion stimulation for complex regional pain syndrome affecting your lower limbs
- External neuromodulation for migraine headaches, trigeminal neuralgia and glossopharyngeal neuralgia
- Multifidus stimulation for back pain
- Occipital nerve stimulation for migraine
- Peripheral nerve stimulation for limb and organ pain
- Sacral nerve stimulation for pelvic pain
- Spinal cord stimulation for back pain
Consultant Who Offers Neuromodulation for Pain Management Services
Locations
Our consultants see patients in modern and technologically advanced facilities in the heart of London. What To Expect
When you come to Cleveland Clinic London for neuromodulation, the first thing we’ll do is make sure you’re a good candidate for this type of therapy. If you are, you’ll receive a trial implant and then the permanent device and follow-up care. Here’s what to expect at each step.
Evaluation and preparation
Your provider will ask about your symptoms and perform a neurological exam. If you’re eligible for neuromodulation, we will perform additional tests, including a psychiatric evaluation, to help us determine whether to move forward with therapy. Our nurse specialist and a device representative will explain how the treatment works and answer any questions you may have.
Trial implant
Before the procedure, you’ll undergo a two-week trial implant. We’ll embed a temporary wire near the source of your pain and connect it to an external neuromodulation transmitter. At the end of the trial, we’ll remove the wire and device. Your consultants will discuss next steps with you and schedule the implantation of the permanent device.
Implant procedure
Before the procedure begins, you’ll receive anaesthesia. You may receive a local to help you relax and feel drowsy or general anaesthesia, which puts you to sleep. The type of anaesthesia you receive depends on the location of the neurotransmitter.
Your consultants will use real-time imaging to implant the neuromodulation transmitter. This ensures they place the transmitter exactly where it needs to be. Then, they embed permanent wires near the source of your pain and connect them to the device.
We programme the neurotransmitter on the day of your implant procedure. You can choose stimulation that causes buzzing or no sensation at all.
The implant procedure is typically a day case, which means you can go home the same day. Nerve stimulation usually starts relieving stubborn pain within a few days.
Follow-up care
You’ll return to Cleveland Clinic London periodically so we can make sure your incision is healing and the stimulator device is working as expected. Your care team will discuss your follow-up schedule with you.
