What To Expect Before Your Cochlear Implant at Cleveland Clinic London

A private consultation is the first step toward improving your hearing. During this appointment, you will learn what a cochlear implant procedure involves and how it could help you. Your consultant will also take the time to understand your hearing loss and goals for an implant.

You will then have appointments with our principal audiologist and speech and language therapist, which form an essential part of your assessment. We want to understand your hearing difficulties, needs and expectations. You will also complete a series of specifically designed hearing and speech tests to help gauge how much you are likely to benefit from a cochlear implant.

You may have further tests to help us plan the best approach for you, including:

Our team is here to answer any questions and ensure you feel comfortable throughout the process. After your consultations, we will go over next steps. Once the assessment is complete, we will have a team meeting to review your case, followed by a further consultation to discuss recommendations and options.

Cochlear Implant Procedures at Cleveland Clinic London

A cochlear implant combines an electronic device placed behind/above your ear with an electrode array inserted inside your cochlea. This connects magnetically to an external sound processor worn on or near your ear. The processor picks up sounds from your environment and sends them to the implant, helping your brain make sense of what you hear.

During surgery, your specialist makes a small cut behind your ear to place the implant, carefully securing it before closing the incision. This minimally invasive procedure is usually done under general anaesthesia, and you will most likely go home the same day.

You may choose an implant for one or both ears. And if you have some natural hearing, it may be preserved.

About two to four weeks after surgery, we will programme your sound processor, turn on the device and guide you through exercises to help you get accustomed to hearing with the implant. It can take time to adjust. Sounds may seem unusual at first, but consistent use and practice will help you hear more naturally over time.

Cochlear implants are designed to last a lifetime, so you will need regular follow-up appointments with the team to check and adjust your device during the first year and annually thereafter.
