Colorectal Cancer Treatment at Cleveland Clinic London
While colorectal cancer is common, receiving your diagnosis likely felt as if it were anything but that. Since then, you may have found yourself asking a lot of questions and wondering if you’ll be OK. The good news? You don’t have to navigate any of this alone. Our team is here to listen and help you get answers — along with the highest level of care.
Colorectal cancer evaluation
Our team will guide you through treatment — starting with an evaluation with one of our colorectal surgeons. This consultant will take time to get to know you and your medical history. They’ll work with other specialists to craft a personalised care plan.
You may need several therapies to get the best possible results. This can include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Minimally invasive colorectal cancer surgery
Surgery is a common bowel cancer treatment. We typically use minimally invasive methods to remove even the hardest-to-reach tumours. Minimally invasive procedures help reduce potential damage to surrounding healthy tissue, which can lead to a faster, less painful recovery. Some of the minimally invasive techniques our colorectal surgeons use include:
- Colonoscopy
- Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMS)
- Transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEMS) and transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS)
- Laparoscopic and robotic surgery
- Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC)
If your colorectal cancer has spread to your liver, hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgeons work with colorectal surgeons to coordinate your care. We may remove both cancers in one operation. We’re one of only a few services in the U.K. to offer this care.
Additional colorectal cancer treatments
In some cases, you may need additional (adjuvant) treatments, such as chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. These treatments can:
- Shrink a tumour before surgery, making it easier to remove
- Lower the likelihood of cancer coming back after surgery
Our partnership with The London Clinic allows us to provide the most seamless, highest-quality private care. Cleveland Clinic London consultants collaborate with The London Clinic team to ensure your adjuvant treatment meets your needs.
Anal cancer detection and treatment
We treat more than just colorectal cancer. From regular screenings with high-resolution anoscopy to personalised treatment plans, our team of anal cancer specialists is here to help.
Depending on your diagnosis, we may first work with The London Clinic to try a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy before surgery. Many people may respond well to this treatment and do not need surgery.
Consultants Who Treat Colorectal Cancer
Locations
Our consultants see patients in modern and technologically advanced facilities in the heart of London. What To Expect After Bowel Cancer Surgery
Your bowel cancer surgery recovery starts in our intensive care unit (ICU). On-site intensivists (intensive care specialists) and highly trained ICU nurses will care for you 24/7. Your colorectal surgeon will also check in on you each day.
Once we discharge you from the hospital, you will start a follow-up care plan, including routine tests and check-ups. If your cancer comes back (recurs), we can treat it as soon as possible.
Your follow-up plan will depend on your original diagnosis and your colorectal cancer risk factors. Typically, we will continue this routine care for up to five years after treatment.
Second Opinions and Virtual Consultations
Patients from all over the world turn to our colorectal cancer consultants for second opinions. We know cancer won’t wait, so we book you as quickly as possible. You can even see us from the comfort of home with a virtual second opinion, removing the obstacle of travel.
Our experienced bowel cancer specialists will study your medical records and test results. They’ll then confirm your diagnosis (if applicable) and provide personalised care recommendations. Second opinions are available regardless of whether you pursue treatment at Cleveland Clinic London.
