Maxillofacial Surgery: Why Choose Cleveland Clinic London?

Our maxillofacial surgeons completed advanced training in medicine, surgery and dentistry, offering a depth of experience. They deliver exceptional care for routine concerns as well as rare and complex conditions.

Highlights of our maxillofacial surgery programme include:

  • Team approach: Maxillofacial surgeons work with other consultants, including neurosurgeons, ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons, cancer specialists (oncologists), highly trained head and neck radiologists and orthodontists to coordinate treatment for complex conditions. They plan procedures together to offer you the highest level of care, tailored to your needs.
  • Comprehensive care: You can access many services and specialties on-site. Radiologists specialising in head and neck issues interpret MRIs and CT scans. Our team also includes speech and language therapists who treat issues affecting speaking and swallowing. We arrange all the services you need for a seamless care experience.
  • Convenience: We make it easier to fit maxillofacial treatments into your busy schedule. Our clinic and hospital are easy to reach, and we typically see new patients within a few days. You can schedule appointments and access medical records using the Cleveland Clinic London MyChart app.

Maxillofacial Surgery Procedures We Perform

Head and neck cancer procedures

We treat everything from early-stage cancers to advanced tumours requiring multiple types of surgery. Maxillofacial surgeons often operate together, enabling us to deliver the highest level of care. They work alongside reconstructive surgeons and ENTs whenever necessary to restore a natural-looking appearance and optimise functioning.

Services also include sentinel lymph node biopsy, a highly sensitive diagnostic surgical test for patients with the earliest oral cancers. This procedure uses leading edge technology to identify and determine whether cancer has spread. For many patients, this means avoiding major surgery. This procedure is recommended by NICE (National Institute of Health and Care Excellence) but is not offered by all cancer surgeons in the UK.

Salivary gland procedures

We are one of the few programmes in the U.K. using minimally invasive techniques to assess and treat salivary gland issues. Sialendoscopy involves a thin tube with a camera at the tip (endoscope). We slide it down the gland to check for stones and narrowing.

Sialendoscopy enables us to catch issues in earlier stages. We use minimally invasive treatments whenever possible. Sometimes, traditional open surgery is necessary.

Facial trauma care

Maxillofacial surgeons provide prompt assessments and treatments for broken facial bones and severe mouth injuries. These conditions may stem from car accidents, bad falls or sports injuries.

You may be able to have surgery in as little as one business day. Our team provides you with an appointment and procedure time, giving you more clarity about the time frame for your treatment and recovery.

Oral surgery with general anaesthesia

We regularly perform oral surgery requiring general anaesthesia. Procedures with anaesthesia are for people who may be anxious about the surgery or have complex problems such as impacted wisdom teeth, facial swelling related to dental infections, or dental cysts. These patients can benefit from a higher level of sedation than a dentist provides. Maxillofacial surgeons also treat patients with medical issues, like being on blood thinners, that may complicate dental work.

If you are having pain or other dental problems but do not have imaging yet, we can help. Dental X-rays are available at a nearby facility, and we receive the results quickly.

Additional Services We Offer

Maxillofacial surgeons provide a variety of other services for neck, mouth and jaw issues, including:

  • Botox® helps with myofascial pain of the jaw and face.
  • Complex jaw surgery can treat facial asymmetry.
  • Nasendoscopy is an in-office endoscopic procedure. We slide an endoscope down the nasal passage. It helps us check the back of the nose, throat and voice box for suspicious growths.
  • Orthognathic surgery permanently advances the lower jaw to treat sleep apnoea.
  • Sterilised washouts (arthrocentesis) and other non-surgical therapies treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
  • Wide excisions remove skin cancer affecting a large area of the face or neck. We sometimes use a flap of healthy tissue to repair it.
  • Removal of lumps in the mouth.
  • Diagnostic biopsy of patches in the mouth, or on the face and neck.
