Is the Intracept Procedure Right for Me?
If you have lived with chronic vertebrogenic pain for more than six months, you know how tiring it can be to carry discomfort through your day. This type of pain starts with damaged endplates of the bones in your spine (vertebrae). The damage can irritate the basivertebral nerve inside these bones, creating ongoing pain that isn’t always eased by standard treatments.
BVNA targets this nerve directly and can offer a new option if other treatments have not helped. In your consultation with one of our pain management experts, you can discuss whether this procedure is a good next step for you.
A Team Approach to Care
If you choose to have the Intracept BVNA procedure at Cleveland Clinic London, your care will be led by consultant musculoskeletal radiologist, Dr. David McKean, who will work alongside a team your care team of experts, including consultant orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists and pain management specialists.

Our consultants see patients in modern and technologically advanced facilities in the heart of London.Having the Intracept Procedure at Cleveland Clinic London
Intracept BVNA is a minimally invasive alternative to open spinal surgery. It is designed to help you return to your normal activities sooner, with less pain during recovery. Rather than a large incision, your consultant will make a small one and use specialised tools to reach the basivertebral nerve. A tiny radiofrequency probe then applies gentle heat to the affected nerve, helping to reduce pain signals. You’ll be comfortably asleep under general anaesthesia throughout the procedure.
You can expect your procedure to last between 60 and 90 minutes, and you’ll likely go home the same day once the anaesthesia wears off. Before you leave, your consultant will go over any temporary restrictions, typically including avoiding exercise for a couple of days. You may notice some soreness, minor bruising or swelling around the incision. A simple over-the-counter pain reliever, such as paracetamol, can usually lessen these symptoms.
With this approach, many patients find they can return to their usual routines more quickly than with traditional spinal surgery.
