Knee Pain
When knee pain begins to limit the activities you enjoy — from taking part in sport to simply going for a walk — it can have a real impact on daily life. At Cleveland Clinic London, we offer private knee care aimed at reducing discomfort and, where appropriate, delaying the need for knee replacement surgery. Our specialist orthopaedic consultants have extensive experience and use the latest, evidence-based techniques to tailor treatment to your needs.
Why Choose Us for Knee Care?
Collaborative care:
We believe in working as a team. This means you may see a variety of consultants, including orthopaedic, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, musculoskeletal radiologists, rheumatologists and sports medicine physicians. We also collaborate with local and national physiotherapists to provide any additional assessments and rehabilitation services you may need.
Industry leaders:
Our surgeons were among the first in the world to perform cartilage resurfacing implants for knee injuries. They also played a key role in developing new techniques for robotic joint replacement and meniscal transplantation — a procedure very few private hospitals in the U.K. offer.
Specialised equipment:
We use two of the most advanced robotic systems for joint replacement, enabling highly precise procedures. The result is a smoother recovery and more predictable, reliable outcomes.
Patient-centred care:
Everyone’s journey with knee pain is different. Our consultants work closely with you to create a personalised care plan that suits your needs and lifestyle. Meet our team.

Evaluating Your Knee Pain
Living with knee pain can be challenging, and it affects everyone differently. At Cleveland Clinic London, our experts focus on finding you long-term relief and will support you at every stage — starting with a thorough assessment.
What happens during your evaluation
Your first evaluation is an important step in understanding your knee pain and planning the best treatment. During this appointment, our specialists will collect information to help them start putting together a care plan that works for you. They will:
- Ask detailed questions about your symptoms, including the pain you’ve felt and how the pain affects your daily life
- Assess your knee’s strength and mobility
- Arrange imaging, such as X-rays or an MRI, to get a clearer picture of your knee’s condition
If we think surgery is the best option for your knee rather than preservation, we will talk through your options, answer all your questions and arrange any preoperative assessments, such as blood tests or an electrocardiogram (ECG).
Consultants Who Treat Knee Pain
Locations
Our consultants see patients in modern and technologically advanced facilities in the heart of London.Treating Your Knee Pain
Our team offers a wide range of knee care services, from medical therapies to advanced surgical procedures. Often, there is not a single solution. Combining different treatments can be the most effective approach. We will work with you to determine the right plan for your needs.
Injections
Injections help deliver substances that promote healing directly to your knee joint. Our renowned consultants typically use real-time imaging to guide the needle to precisely the right spot. We apply a numbing solution to your skin before the injection, making you as comfortable as possible.
Types of injections we offer include:
- Hyaluronic acid: A slippery substance that your body naturally produces
- nSTRIDE® autologous protein solution (APS): A substance made from your own blood to slow cartilage deterioration
- Platelet-rich plasma: The part of your blood that aids in clotting
- Steroids: Manufactured drugs that resemble your body’s natural cortisol
Knee preservation
If your knee is worn or damaged, knee preservation may help. It can reduce pain, improve movement, slow further cartilage wear and, in some cases, repair existing damage. We often use this approach for cartilage injuries, certain congenital knee conditions or early-stage arthritis if the cartilage loss is not severe. These procedures are less invasive, using smaller incisions, and usually allow a quicker recovery.
Types of knee preservation surgery we offer:
- Knee arthroscopy: Arthroscopy uses small incisions and a camera to diagnose and treat problems inside your knee. It also preserves bone and minimises soft tissue damage.
- Cartilage repair: This treatment rebuilds your knee’s surface and helps it work more efficiently. Options include removing loose or damaged cartilage and procedures that stimulate new tissue growth.
- Meniscus surgery: We typically use arthroscopy to repair a torn meniscus. If your meniscus is badly damaged or worn away, we may recommend a meniscus transplant. Another option is a meniscal implant, where we place a synthetic spacer to cushion the area between your femur (thighbone) and tibia (shinbone).
- Osteotomy: Our surgeons cut and realign the bones in your knees to distribute the weight more evenly across your joint. If you have bow legs or knock knees, this may be an option for you.
- Partial knee resurfacing: This procedure uses custom implants and other methods to repair or replace specific parts of your knee. These may include the Episealer® mini-metal implant from Episurf® and the BioPoly® polyethylene implant.
Rehabilitation
Our and can help improve how your knee works. We begin with a comprehensive evaluation to identify any weaknesses or imbalances. This allows us to create a customised treatment plan that may include:
- Exercises: We guide you through gentle movements that build strength and increase flexibility.
- Education: We teach you techniques for reducing knee strain during daily activities.
- Knee braces and orthotics: Devices, such as knee braces or orthotics can help position your knee in a specific way to relieve pressure on your joint.
Knee replacement surgery
While knee preservation treatments may give you years of pain-free movement, there are times when a knee replacement may be the best option. We understand that choosing to have a knee replacement is a big decision — one that requires time and a commitment to recovery. Our specialist consultants will be by your side and take the time to answer all your questions.
